The Historical archive, set up by Istat in 2001, collects all the main documents produced by the Institute: administrative acts, photographs, methodological studies, questionnaire forms, statistical analyses, research, preparatory material for surveys, brochures and press releases, in paper format or electronically.

Alongside its preservation and documentation function, the Historical Archives has the fundamental purpose of making its archival heritage available to the scholarly community and integrating it with that of other archives.

In addition to the functions of preservation, inventorying and valorisation of the documentation produced or received in the context of institutional and administrative activities and relating to business concluded at least 30 years ago, the Historical Archive has the fundamental task of making its own cultural heritage, in particular the inventoried documents, available to the community of researchers and scholars. The accessibility of documents and the protection of confidentiality are regulated by current national legislation.

Of the 24,223 archival units indexed, 106 are photographs. For the latter category of documents, digitisation and publication is in progress. Materials collected for historical exhibitions and scientific meetings organised during the celebrations of Istat’s 90th anniversary are also available online.
